Lines to remember!

As a greenie coming into the yachting industry, these are my favorite phrases that have really stuck with me. I am someone who learns by action and repetition. After reading these phrases over and over I truly believe these helped me elevate in my career field.

The LAST line on is the FIRST line off

My passion has always been to be a stewardess however learning deck responsibilities goes hand in hand. I had the opportunity to work as a deck/stew which meant I had to learn lines and knots FAST. My first few times leaving and coming into the dock I could never remember which lines to focus on first until i heard this quote. The springs must come off first and be put on last.

What are spring lines?

Spring lines on a yacht are the mooring ropes that run at an angle. They can act as the breaks on a boat to stop it from moving too much. When arriving at a dock, most times this is the order you will secure lines in. First spring line, next bow line and lastly stern line. Once everything is secure you will go back in tighten and readjust if needed.

If you are ever unsure, ALWAYS check with another crew or captain by saying “Confirming. spring last” when docking or “Confirming. Spring first” when leaving the berth.

  1. Stern port line – stops drifting away on the left
  2. Stern starboard line – stops drifting away on the right
  3. Forward spring – controls forward motion
  4. Aft spring – controls backward motion
